West Central Iowa Solid Waste is encouraging local residents to think about ways they can recycle more this holiday season with the introduction of their Christmas recycling gift exchange. According to Education Coordinator, Karen Monical, American waste production increases by about 25 percent around the holidays, and a good portion of it can be recycled.
For people who already recycle and have a bin that is in good shape, Monical says they can stop by city hall in any of the participating communities or by West Central Iowa Solid Waste to pick up a decal that helps remind people what can and cannot be recycled at our local facility. Thanks to support from local leaders, Monical says most Carroll County residents will not have travel very far if they want to participate.
The participating communities include: Arcadia, Breda, Coon Rapids, Glidden, Halbur, Manning and Templeton. Some of the increased waste from the holidays comes from meals, snacks and drinks during gatherings with family and friends. Monical says many of those materials cannot be recycled, but the waste generated from gift giving often is.
The recycling center has a comprehensive list of best practices for waste disposal available on their website at westcentralsolidwaste.com. For more information about the Christmas recycling gift exchange, you can also call 712-792-5001.
