There are two incumbents and two newcomers running for two open seats on the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education. One of those newcomers, Sani Saidou Salissou, who goes by Sal, says he came to Carroll in 2015. He met his wife, Stephanie, here and the couple has two children, five-year-old Jamil and three-year-old Amina. He says his desire to integrate into the community led him to identifying ways his knowledge and skills can be of benefit. He began with coaching fifth and sixth-grade soccer for the Carroll Rec Center about three years ago.

He has many ideas for ways the board can support the students and staff members. The first is that education can become more focused to the strengths of the individual student.

Sal adds that a change in the way we educate our youth would more closely match the needs of our changing economy and world. He also says the mental health of our children should be something that is addressed in a more proactive, instead of reactive way.

This, Sal says, extends to the relationships between parents and teachers. This should be a collaboration in the best interest of the children, but sometimes ends up with teachers and the parents not listening to each other. He would be interested in implementation of more open communication options.

The common thread between these two, he says is truly listening to the others and then searching together for a solution or a compromise. Sal says he will bring a calm and common-sense approach to facing issues to the board if elected. The one thing that everyone will find when they meet him is he is always smiling and working for the good of the group as a whole.

Sal says he is ready to do the research needed to be on the board and looks forward to being able to work with other board members in enhancing the educational system for the students, faculty, staff and community. He is a truck driver for Core-Mark, and says he has a goal of someday owning his own truck and running his own business. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you an interview with incumbent, Jen Munson, in upcoming newscasts and links to interviews with the other two candidates, Duane Horsley and Kristen Lundstrom can be found below.
