Source Of Wednesday Landfill Fire Remains Unknown, But Residents Can Help With Prevention

The Carroll Fire Department responded to a fire at the landfill on Kittyhawk Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. this (Wednesday) morning. Director of the Carroll County Solid Waste Management Commission (CCSWMC), Mary Wittry, says the fire was located in an area of the landfill currently being filled with garbage. They are uncertain as to the source, even though they have had several fires from lithium batteries already this year and believe it could be one of several suspected causes.

The fire was not extensive, but there were other factors at play, creating more dangerous circumstances for those fighting a blaze at night.

Wittry adds there could be hazardous fumes created by a fire in the landfill or some items in the area may be combustible. Also, the hills of garbage can be treacherous, however, in this instance the fire was in a flattened area where workers have been spreading out the debris. Wittry says there are things residents can do to help keep the chances of fire from occurring.

Just as the Carroll landfill has seen an increase in the number of fires over the past year, Wittry says the same is happening across the state. The Carroll Fire Department worked with employees at the landfill to get the fire under control and were on scene for approximately one hour.
