Next Round Of Derelict Building Grant Applications Available As DNR Distributes 2021 Grants To Nine Communities

The community of Wall Lake is one of nine to be awarded grants through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Derelict Building grant program. The money is earmarked for the deconstruction or renovation of abandoned structures, removal of asbestos and efforts to limit the amount of construction and demolition materials going to landfills. Wall Lake received $121,700 for asbestos abatement, renovation and deconstruction at the former East Sac County Elementary School as the community works to repurpose the structure into a family recreation center. The DNR Derelict Building grant program helps rural communities with populations of 5,000 or less remove environmental hazards, improve community appearance and minimize costs by recycling and reusing building materials through deconstruction or renovation of those abandoned, derelict buildings. The next round of grant applications must be submitted by Feb. 25, 2022. More details on that are available through the link included below.
