Ar-We-Va and East Sac Softball End Busy Weeks With Wins; Kuemper, Glidden Ralston, SCC, and Audubon Fall

Kuemper wrapped up their busy week with another game against Atlantic Friday night in a losing effort. Atlantic started off batting in the top of the first and got two runners home to take the early 2-0 lead. Kuemper was able to respond in the bottom of the first, where Hailey Ostrander got a single to get on base, and was later batted in by Kenzie Schon’s RBI single, cutting down the Atlantic lead to 2-1. 

Atlantic’s response in the top of the second was two more runners brought home, and another in the top of the third, taking the 5-1 lead. Chloe Venteicher started in the circle for Kuemper where she allowed four earned runs and recorded two strikeouts in her two innings pitched. Kamryn Venner entered the circle in the third and gave her defense a good look, going three batters up and down in the fourth and fifth innings. Kuemper was able to add a run in the bottom of the fourth as Brianna Lux got home run number two on the season, cutting down the Atlantic lead to 5-2. 

Atlantic got back to scoring in the top of the sixth and seventh, adding three more runs to their total by the seventh and taking the 8-2 lead. Kuemper saw Kyndal Hilgenberg stranded on third in the fifth inning, unable to score, and Kenadee Loew and Kaci Peter stranded at first. Atlantic pushed forward in the bottom of the seventh, getting two 4-3 plays and grabbing a fly out to left field to close out the game and give them the 8-2 win. 

Kuemper falls to 15-11 overall on the season and 8-6 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. The Knights are back in action with a double header against Clarinda Monday, June 28th with game one scheduled for 5:30.

East Sac at West Bend Mallard

East Sac finished off a four game week with a convincing win over West Bend Mallard Friday evening. Mary Bontrager got the offense started in the top of the first inning with a double that eventually turned into a run scored when she was brought home by Bree Boeckman who got an RBI single. Boeckman later got to second on a wild throw and scored off an error from the West Bend Mallard shortstop, giving East Sac the early 2-0 lead. 

East Sac had a great inning in the top of the second as they added five more runs to extend their lead to 7-0. Bontrager, Maty Quirk, Laryn Sharp, Aleisha Thayer, and Abby Schueneman all scored runs for East Sac. West Bend Mallard pushed back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to cut down the East Sac lead to 7-2. Kami Ross and Thayer scored again for the Raiders with two runs in the top of the third to take back the seven run lead at 9-2. Both East Sac and West Bend Mallard went scoreless in the fourth inning and got back to scoring in the fifth. 

Quirk scored her second run to put East Sac up 10-2, while West Bend Mallard added two runs to their total, cutting down the Raider lead to 10-4. Macy Gustavson, pinch hitting for Ross, got the top of the sixth started off with a home run that pumped up the Raider offense. Emersyn Mack, Quirk, and Bontrager were brought home to score three more runs, giving East Sac the 14-4 win in six innings. 

East Sac improves to 12-6 on the season and 6-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. East Sac is in action next when they welcome Carroll to Wall Lake on Tuesday, June 29th.

Ar-We-Va rounded out their four game week with a strong win over CAM Anita Friday evening. 

CAM Anita got on the board first with a solo run in the top of the third inning, taking the 1-0 lead. Jadeyn Smith faced off against the Cougars for seven innings, where she only allowed one earned run, recorded four strikeouts, and grabbed another win in the circle. Ar-We-Va’s big inning came in the bottom of the fifth, where they scored three runners taking the 3-1 lead. Hannah Kraus, Jamie Hausman, and Amber Ragaller all scored for the Rockets with Kora Obrecht credited with 2 RBI and Kraus credited with one. 

After a scoreless sixth inning, CAM Anita got on the board once again with another solo run to cut down the Ar-We-Va lead to 3-2. Despite a close one run difference, Ar-We-Va worked well defensively and closed out the inning to hold on to win 3-2.

Ar-We-Va improves to 8-7 overall on the season and 8-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference, and move ahead of CAM Anita to take third place in the conference. Ar-We-Va comes back from the weekend break to take on Woodbine at home on Monday, June 28th.

Audubon at Earlham

Audubon wrapped up their week by going 2-2 and playing a tough game against Earlham Friday evening. Earlham started their offense off by scoring five runs in the first two innings, while keeping Audubon scoreless through those two innings. Jordan Porsch had the highlight for the Wheelers, going 2-3 and hitting a double. Alexis Obermeier was in the circle for the Wheelers, going five and one third innings pitched, allowing four earned runs and recording three strikeouts. 

Audubon made it difficult for Earlham to score in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, keeping them scoreless. Earlham came back in the fifth with a solo run, and ended it in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs scored to win 10-0. 

Audubon stays in the hunt in the Western Iowa Conference, falling to 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the conference. They will be in action on Monday, June 28th when they and IKM-Manning participate in the Western Iowa Conference tournament.

South Central Calhoun wrapped up a fairly busy week with a tough loss to Southeast Valley Friday evening. The Jaguars started their offense off by taking the quick 8-0 lead after two innings. South Central Calhoun saw some good hitters, Emma Anderson and Kylee Schleisman went 2-3 in their at bats with Brielle Korleski going 1-3. Sally Musselman and her defense were able to keep SE Valley scoreless in the third inning. 

SE Valley added runs to their score, taking a 10-0 lead after four innings. South Central Calhoun put up two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Emma Anderson both scored and was credited with an RBI as Brielle Korleski got another RBI single and Mady Smidt scored a run, cutting down the SE Valley lead to 10-2. No runs were added in the bottom of the fifth by SE Valley, but in the bottom of the sixth the Jaguars added two more runs and ended the game in six innings 12-2.

South Central Calhoun falls to 8-10 on the season and 3-7 in the Twin Lakes Conference and goes 1-2 on the week. The Titans return after the weekend break with a road game against Emmetsburg on Monday, June 28th.

Glidden Ralston finished up their week with a match up against Woodbine Friday evening. Glidden Ralston got off to a good start in the top of the first where Elizabeth Lloyd got an RBI single to score Vanessa Koehler, taking the early 1-0 lead. Woodbine came out strong in the bottom of the first, scoring four runners and taking the 4-1 lead. Vanessa Koehler was in the circle for the Wildcats, and in her three innings pitched, she only allowed two earned runs and recorded five strikeouts.

Woodbine continued to add to their lead in each innings played. They added three runs in the second, four in the third, and one more in the fourth to take the win 12-1. 

Glidden Ralston returns from the weekend break to take on Whiting at home on Monday, June 28th.
