A Des Moines man, formerly of Coon Rapids, confessed to a stealing a vehicle and trailer and items from private garages. He is also a person of interest in ongoing investigations. Guthrie County Sheriff, Marty Arganbright, released a statement Tuesday saying a truck and trailer were reported stolen from rural Bayard on June 2. The West Des Moines Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office had stopped the truck prior to the report being filed and were able to share driver information and bodycam footage when the theft came to light. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Shawn Richard Knudsen, was taken into custody by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office June 16 on the Guthrie County warrants. Knudsen later admitted to stealing the truck, trailer and tools and told the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office where they were located. Deputies had also received reports of items missing from garages in Bayard, and the timeframe lined up with the previous burglary. Surveillance footage aided in identifying Knudsen and he later admitted to those thefts. Yesterday (Monday) another rural Bayard resident came forward to report a stolen dirt bike and generator. Law enforcement had seen Knudsen driving a dirt bike fitting that description, and he again admitted to being in possession of the stolen property. He has been charged with: six counts of third-degree burglary, class D felonies; five counts of theft, ranging from felonies to misdemeanors based on the value of the items stolen; five counts of felony criminal trespass; and ongoing criminal conduct, a class B felony. Authorities say Knudsen is being considered a person of interest in other, ongoing investigations. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office also reminds everyone to keep their garage doors closed and vehicles locked.
