First Annual Carroll SuperDraft Set For May 15 To Raise Money For Patients Receiving Treatment At St. Anthony Cancer Center

A group of local softball players is inviting area residents to join them for a day of ballgames and fun next month to help raise money for patients undergoing cancer treatment at the St. Anthony Cancer Center in Carroll. The tournament is being organized primarily by Katie and Tad Decker, who borrowed inspiration from friends in Ohio. Decker says the event is known as a SuperDraft.

For the inaugural event, Decker says they decided to limit the tournament to eight teams, and those spots filled quickly. The pre-selected captains held their fantasy-style draft this past weekend and the May 15 rosters are now set. Games will begin at 9 a.m. at the softball fields near Merchants Park and are expected to last late into the evening. Decker says they are already off to a good start with fundraising through player registration fees, but organizers are hoping to push their efforts to the next level with big crowds during the tournament.

She adds the community has been tremendous in supporting the SuperDraft, already surpassing her initial expectations. Decker is hoping they can raise $10,000 in the first year and jokes that she will do cartwheels down the baselines if they can reach that mark. Decker works as a certified medical dosimetrist and sees the struggles that cancer patients and their families go through on a daily basis. The goal for the SuperDraft is simply to help ease a portion of those challenges.

Decker adds businesses or individuals can help sponsor the SuperDraft by purchasing banners, which can be used to recognize a loved one or friend going through treatment or show their company’s support for cancer patients.
