Kuemper at OABCIG- Class 2A District 1

OABCIG: 79

Kuemper: 63

The Kuemper Knights were able to go toe to toe with the 19-1 OABCIG Falcons in the Substate 1 quarter final match, but fell short in the fourth quarter on Thursday night. The hometown Falcons would start off the contest with a huge 25 point performance, thanks to Cooper DeJean, who scored 11 points in the first quarter. The Knights would see some early success from the three point line, sinking three from behind the arc and scoring 14 points in the first quarter. The second quarter is where the Knights started to come alive and get back in this contest. The Knights were able to be brought to the free throw line a total of four times making seven of their eight free throws. Mayhall would be fouled as time expired by DeJean and would make the two free throws to end the second quarter and cut down the Falcon’s 10 point lead to six at 38-32.

The Knights would ride their momentum shift into the third quarter as Issac Evans would trim the Falcon lead down to five points with a lay up. The closest the Knights came to taking over the game would be thanks to Noah Bauer, who’s only basket in the third quarter would bring the Knights within three points of the Falcon lead. After that bucket, the Falcons would start to gain back their large lead, seeing plenty of players getting to the basket, including DeJean who had six points in the third quarter. The Falcons would pull away some at the end of the third and hold a 57-49 lead. In the fourth quarter, the biggest thing that haunted the Kuemper Knights were the free throws from the Falcons. The Falcons, in the fourth quarter alone, went to the charity stripe a total of 10 times and made 12 of their 20 baskets. While the Knights gave the Falcons a run for their money, they would end up losing this contest by a score of 79-63.

Individually for the Knights, seniors John Mayhall, Mitchell Badding, and Issac Evans would end their final game as a Kuemper Knight in double digits. Mayhall would post 18 points, three rebounds, and seven assists, Badding would have 15 points, one rebound, and one steal, and Evans had 13 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one block. Dawson Gifford would also be a great support player for the Knights in this contest, posting eight assists along with four points and one steal. The Knights’ season comes to an end with a final record of 9-14.

The OABCIG Falcons move onto the Class 2A Substate 1 Semifinals and will take on the East Sac County Raiders on Tuesday, February 23rd. Stay tuned for more information on the details surrounding that broadcast from Carroll Broadcasting on Tuesday.

East Sac showed poise in the 4th quarter after letting a double digit lead slip away and falling behind.  The Raiders started quickly on both offense and defense as Dylan Meredith and Camden Schroeder hit some 3’s. Then the Raiders started finding Tyler Schmitt open at the rim. Ridge View began to heat up from behind the arc in the 3rd but got it rolling in the 4th and tied the game late. The Raptors took a brief 47-45 lead but Gavin Vondrak answered with a huge 3 and Tyler Wright extended the lead to 3 with a mid-range jumper. Harlan At Carroll- Regular Season

Carroll closed out the regular season going 20-2 but the 20th win wasn’t easy as they had to battle back after a tough 1st quarter in which they didn’t defend well. Carroll was down 8 heading into the 2nd quarter but rebounded to take a 1 point lead at half. The Tigers improved on defense and began to get a few shots to fall. The one point lead at half would grow to 3 heading into the final stanza. Kaleb Booth hit a few clutch shots and needed too as the Tigers didn’t shoot well from the free throw line. Carroll missed a couple free throws down the stretch that could have extended the lead to 6 or 7 but made stops to seal the win.

Kaleb Booth had a team high 25 points and 7 assists, Tory Feldman added 13 points and 6 rebounds.
