Next Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Carroll Rotary Club will mark its 100th anniversary, having been founded on that date in 1921. Foundation Chair and last year’s President, Bob Fasbender, says the club itself was started 16 years prior in Chicago by businessman Paul Harris.
Fasbender says one of the main goals of the Rotary was the eradication of polio, which garnered donations from around the world and gained support of many different business leaders, including Bill Gates.
The Carroll chapter of the Rotary started with just 17 members and an interesting limitation put on membership at the beginning.
The Rotary Club’s main motto is “Service Above Self,” and Fasbender says they go by a four-way test when considering service ideals.
Fasbender says the pandemic stopped their meetings for only a couple of weeks as they were able to move to Zoom and then to mask wearing on Mondays at noon at the Family Table. COVID, however, will delay a 100th celebration as they are looking at hopefully being able to host a get together this fall. The Rotary has supported many, many area initiatives and non-profits This includes: New Hope Village, local scholarships, bicycle helmets, dictionaries for local third graders, RSVP, St. Anthony, congregate meals, Boy Scouts, the fireman’s appreciation dinner, coats for kids, Foster Grandparents, Carrollfest and more. The Rotary will be recognized with a proclamation by Mayor, Dr. Eric Jensen, at the city council meeting Monday evening.
