Bridge Crane Bid Alternate Approved For Carroll Street Maintenance Building

The City of Carroll was asked to decide whether or not to include a two-ton bridge crane in the plans for the new street maintenance facility. Director of Public Works, Randy Krauel, says the planning process is in the design phase with anticipated material production to follow soon. However, the inclusion or exclusion of the crane plays a pivotal role at this point. At the time the original plans were approved, Krauel says they believed they could install the infrastructure and add the crane later. However, the manufacturer of the crane has declined to verify the shop drawings without a purchase order and they will not offer any guarantees on future design alterations.

Krauel presented city council members with three options. The first stay with the plan and construct the supporting structure, but not place the crane at this time.

The second option is to remove the infrastructure for the crane altogether.

The final option is to add the crane during building construction at the bid price of $48,200.

Council members preferred and approved the final option of including the crane in the initial construction. They agree the installation cost is much less than what a workers’ compensation claim could be for someone injured because the heavy-lifting device was not available. They also agree that the installation in a shop of this nature has become a nearly universal standard.
