Iowa DHS Reminds Low Income, Disabled Or Elderly Iowans Of Free Tax Preparation Services

The Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) is offering free tax preparation at sites throughout the state to elderly, disabled or low to moderate income Iowans. The program is funded through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) initiative from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Government Funding and Compliance Manager at the Iowa Center for Economic Success, Erma Mujić, says, “In a year like the one we just had, filing taxes can seem more stressful than ever. The EITC/VITA program ensures that hardworking Iowans can access accurate, efficient, and free tax preparation in a safe and supportive environment. The way our volunteer tax preparers work with our clients will look different this year—many working virtually—but the history of strong service remains the same.” Through the program, Iowans can find IRS-trained and certified volunteers to help them complete their tax filings and determine if they qualify for the earned income, child or education tax credits. Last year, more than 12,000 returns were filed through Iowa’s VITA program. To determine eligibility or find a site near you, follow the link included below.
