Audubon At Exira-EHK

Exira-EHK 53

Ethan Klocke banked in an off-balance 3 at the buzzer and Audubon squeaks out a game they controlled most of the game. The Wheelers only trailed 13-11 late in the 1st quarter and 53-52 with 13 seconds left before Klocke hit the game winner. The Spartans did a nice job taking away Audubon first option after the timeout but Klocke got the ball from Caron Bauer and dribbled to his right, he glanced up at the clock and saw under 1.5 seconds remaining. He fired up the shot that banked in as the horn sounded. Tyler Petersen drained a 3 just 13 seconds prior to that to put the Spartans up by 1. Petersen had missed 3 free throws just before that but responded with the big 3. Coach Coleman Mullenix called timeout to draw up the play for the Wheeler who have won 3 of their last 4 games.

The Wheelers opened up a 6 point lead early in the 2nd quarter after the game was tied heading into the quarter. Cash Emgarten knocked down a 3 to make it 21-18 as the Spartans tried to hang tough but Audubon answered again and stretched the lead to 29-21 at half. The Wheelers were balanced offensively in the 1st half with Ethan Klocke and Carson Bauer each with 7, Jackson Diest had 6 and Gavin Smith added 5.

Joel Klocke hit a 3 early in the 3rd and the Wheelers looked in control up 45-34 but Exira-EHK answered with an 11-0 run to tie the game. Joel answered again with a 3 and a drive for a layup to put the Wheelers up by 5. They led 52-47 with a couple minutes left. Tyler Petersen hit a pair of 3’s including the one to put the Spartans up by 1 with 13 seconds left.  The Wheelers were able to open things up in the 2nd half with good dribble penetration and finding Joey Schramm who had 8 of his 10 points in the 2nd half and all near the basket. Schramm also had a tremendous game on defense helping to hold Easton Nelson to 4 points.

Audubon improves to 4-8 overall as they head to Treynor on Tuesday.
