As a part of their routine equipment rotation, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will be trading in and replacing a 2016 Ford Explorer that is currently being used for their K-9 unit. Sheriff, Ken Pingrey, recently presented details on the upgrade to the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, explaining the space required for the specialized K-9 equipment.
Pingrey told board members because of this issue, he would prefer to purchase a larger SUV, a Chevrolet Tahoe. This would increase the interior space from around 87 cubic feet to just shy of 123 cubic feet. With a price difference of slightly over $8,460, Supervisor, Neil Bock, asked about altering the size of the dog kennel.
Bock also suggested having the kennel modified locally and Chair, Rich Ruggles, asked about the possibility of utilizing a pickup instead.
Pingrey says they have had K-9s in the past, but not one of this nature.
The board also discussed the fact that the bid for the Tahoe came from Karl Chevrolet, who has the government contract for these types of vehicles and are able to offer a significant discount on an SUV that should hold a higher trade-in value. The replacement of this vehicle and the specialized equipment needed in the new one have also been accounted for in the department budget and would not create any issues there. After a lengthy discussion, the board approved the purchase of the Chevrolet Tahoe on a unanimous vote.
