Coon Rapids Bayard hung on for the road win to open the season on Thursday night. The Crusaders led early but found themselves down by 2 at the half. They came out hot in the 3rd quarter scoring 18 points to grab the lead heading into the 4th quarter. They never relinquished the lead and were up by 7 with around 2:00 left but had to make a defensive stop late. The Cardinals knocked down a three and then got a steal in the closing minute of the game. The Crusaders defense held and Coon Rapids Bayard opens the season 1-0. Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says they did a nice job handling the pressure late and she was happy to get out of there with the win.
Mia Leighty and Brynn Bass did a nice job handling the ball throughout the game and were solid defensively as they two combined for 10 of the teams 16 steals. Breeley Clayburg came up big in the post as Alaya Betts who finished with 10 points battled foul trouble.
Coon Rapids Bayard outscored the Cardinals in three of the four quarters and outscored them 18-11 in the 3rd. Three players finished in double figures and Breeley Clayburg nearly had a double-double.
Mia Leighty had a team high 13 points to go with 4 steals. Brynn Bass added 12 points and 6 steals. Alaya Betts battled foul trouble and finished with 10 points and 4 steals and Clayburg finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
The Crusaders head into a tough stretch of the season as they host Exira-EHK on Friday before playing CAM Anita and Paton Churdan.
