In early September, as the City of Carroll was working toward a referendum vote on the Carroll Rec Center renovations and addition, some city council members questioned the stability of Local Option Sales Tax (L.O.S.T.) proceeds when it came to funding that project and several others. City Clerk and Finance Director, Laura Schaefer, explained at that time that the state was predicting an increase in proceeds instead of a COVID-19-related decrease. She says they receive 95 percent of the predicted funds on a monthly basis and then a “true up” payment on the balance is made in November. This year, City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, is reporting that true up payment is the largest in their history of collecting L.O.S.T.
Pogge-Weaver says this reflects a strong increase in retail activity in Carroll, even in light of COVID-19.
Pogge-Weaver adds this is not just great news for the City of Carroll, but for all the other communities in the county who will receive an increase in L.O.S.T. proceeds related to this positive economic activity. He is also encouraging residents to support our local merchants during the holiday season as we continue to battle surges in the COVID-19 virus. A listing of previous L.O.S.T. collections can be found with this story on our website.
