SCC To Begin Requiring Masks For Students Friday

Students in the South Central Calhoun (SCC) Community School District will be required to wear face coverings to school starting Friday, Oct. 23. Entering the year, the school board adopted a Return to Learn plan that specified mask-wearing was optional while attending in-person classes. However, school officials reversed course at their meeting Monday night following updated guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health. Previous guidance required students to quarantine for at least 14 days after a confirmed exposure, but the new recommendations say this is unnecessary if both parties were wearing masks. In an effort to avoid quarantining healthy children, students will be expected to wear masks during the school day and on buses, excluding meals, recess, PE or when social distancing is possible. Face shields and gators do not meet the district’s face covering requirements. Students unable to provide their own masks will be given one by the district. These masks will be collected by school staff and laundered at least once per week. Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, spectators at all district-hosted events will be required to wear a face covering. Parents and guardians with questions are encouraged to contact their child’s attendance center using the contact points included below.
