Lake City Forgoes Fall Burn Season Due To Drought Conditions

Officials in Lake City have opted to forgo their usual fall yard waste burning period this year due to the persistent drought conditions in the region. Lake City, like many area communities, temporarily lifts their in-town ban on open burning in October to allow residents to easily dispose of their yard refuse. Administrator, Eric Wood, says safety concerns have put a hold on those plans.

The city council’s decision to cancel the fall burn season matches the countywide burn ban put into effect on Aug. 31. However, Wood says their order does allow for some leeway.

Wood reminds residents they should not dispose of their yard waste in their regular garbage bins. Instead, they should transport their leaves, sticks and other similar materials to Lake City’s disposal site, which is located approximately two miles southwest of town at 3871 Harris Avenue. The site is open from sunrise through sunset each day into November. As of Wednesday, 20 Iowa counties have burn bans in place, including Audubon and Sac Counties.
