(Update w/ audio) CCSD Announces Move To Hybrid Learning Model For High School Students Beginning Wednesday

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 2, Carroll High School (CHS) students will be transitioning to a hybrid-learning model due to an increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases and a high rate of student absences. As of Monday, six CHS students have tested positive for the coronavirus with an additional 95 students in quarantine due to confirmed exposures. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says they knew coming into the year that physical distancing at the high school would prove to be challenging.

Under the board-approved hybrid-learning model, students will be split into two groups. Group A will consist of students with last names beginning with A through L and Group B made up of students with last names starting with M through Z. Starting Wednesday, the groups will alternate between in-person classes and remote learning.

Ar-We-Va High School, which participates in half-day class sharing with CHS, is also transitioning to a hybrid model on Sept. 2 and will cohort their students in the same manner as Carroll. According to Berlau, their goal is to keep students in front of teachers for as much of the year as possible, and making the switch is the best way to ensure this. School meals will still be available to students while in the hybrid model, and transportation is expected to continue as normal. He encourages parents or guardians with questions to contact the school directly.

Berlau says the high school will remain in the hybrid model through the end of September. School officials will announce on Friday, Sept. 25 whether they will continue using the model into October. The details of CCSD’s hybrid-learning plan can be found included below.
