Long-Time Kuemper Educator To Receive Award At Bishop’s Fundraiser Next Month

A man who has spent nearly 50 years dedicated to educating and coaching students at the Kuemper Catholic School System will be honored by the Sioux City Diocese next month. The annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools has two major changes this year that include a move to a virtual format and a new name, the Bishop’s Fundathon for Catholic Schools. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13 and includes the presentation of four Excellence in Education awards, and Kuemper’s Bill Kane will be a recipient. Kane came to Kuemper as a math teacher in 1976. During his tenure, he coached 90 teams across six sports before he retired from coaching in 2006. Kane retired from teaching at the end of the 2019/2020 school year. He says initially, his mother really wanted him to be a priest. “[…] but I told her that wasn’t going to happen. I know she was happy when I started teaching in Catholic schools,” Kane adds. “I am sure after 47 years, she is still smiling down. I may not have become a priest, but I am sure that the Lord’s vocation for me was teaching in Catholic schools where I got to work with thousands of students and be with my loving family.” Kane and his wife Vickie have been married since 1973 and had three daughters who all graduated from Kuemper High School. They also have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The Excellence in Education awards are presented to teachers who have a clear, integrated philosophy of Catholic education and are a witness of this in their professional and personal life. The fundathon is the largest fundraiser benefitting all 16 schools in the diocese. Supporters will be able to watch the event beginning with a livestreamed Mass at 10 a.m. on Sept. 13.
