Greene County First Responders Respond To Numerous Calls During And Hours After Monday’s Derecho

Law enforcement agencies in Greene County were busy responding to calls hours after a severe storm tore through the region Monday morning. The first report came in at approximately 9:55 a.m. when sirens were activated as the storm passed through Jefferson. The Jefferson Police Department was dispatched to multiple locations throughout the city in response to business and home alarm activations and downed cable and power lines. Authorities were forced to close multiple streets and intersections while crews worked to safely reopen roadways. At 10:45 a.m., the Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident resulting from a downed utility pole. Forty-four-year-old Jason McClellan of Boone was traveling on 230th Street in a 2011 Dodge Ram when the pole toppled and landed on the truck and the trailer he was pulling. From 7:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., the Jefferson Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to Washington Park, the 200 block of South Chestnut Street and the 400 block of South Locust Street as re-energized power lines began arcing and starting small fires. The powerful storm, called a derecho, generated wind gusts as high as 83 mph as it passed through Jefferson Monday.
