Just last November, the Carroll American Legion reached out to area residents and asked for their support in purchasing 770 new flags and aluminum poles. Legion member, RT Schreck, says they were stunned by the show of support and how they reached and surpassed that goal, being able to create a fund for replacement of flags as they wear.
That, he says is the good news. The bad news is the number of flags they now have has overwhelmed the local Boy Scouts and Barb Daisy, who have been instrumental in placement on special holidays. Schreck says they discussed a unique solution at a recent meeting and are reaching out to citizens again for their help with a project that goes beyond money to the donation of time.
In order to make this as easy as possible, the volunteers would only need to pick up and drop off the flags one time each.
Schreck says they have 430 flags right now. However, once the city streetscape projects are finished, they will be able to fly the 770 flags purchased through last year’s fundraiser. Schreck says all anyone has to do to volunteer to help hang these flags is contact him to get signed up.
Schreck says they are hoping to have the volunteers assisting this coming Labor Day holiday. Flags go up on Sept. 4 and come down on Sept. 8, and he says this would be a good trial run. He adds they are not asking for lifetime commitments, families can do it for as long as it works for their schedule.
