On Monday, the IKM-Manning Board of Education and administrative team will distribute a survey to parents and guardians of all students, seeking their input on Return to Learn plans. They have produced three options for the 2020/21 school year, currently scheduled to begin Friday, Aug. 14. The ideal situation is to have students return to face-to-face instruction, but that may not be a feasible option due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first plan, one the board says they would implement if school started today, is full attendance with family choice. Families have the option to allow their student to participate in classroom instruction either remotely or in-person. Students would not, however, attend for a full week. Wednesdays would be allocated to deep cleaning, professional development and one-on-one or small group instruction. A hybrid plan would have students in preschool through eighth grade in attendance four days a week and high school students one day, with the rest remote. The fifth day for in-attendance students would still require remote learning. This, would ideally be utilized for the short-term. The final plan is full remote learning. There may be a time when this model is necessary. Again, they would only shift to full remote learning if needed then phase back into one of the other two plans. The district has also identified protocols for deep cleaning, PPE and distancing, meal services and transportation. Physical distancing is extremely difficult on buses, so the current plan is to reduce town routes and ask families to transport as much as possible. They will be requiring students to wear face masks on the bus as well as during loading and unloading. Methods for the management of shuttle busing are still being developed.
