The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting residents to take part in their annual turkey population count this July and August. All that is required is the notation of the date and county in which turkeys are seen, if it was an adult female or adult male and whether or not there were any young poults. Males can be distinguished by the beards on their breast. There is then an online survey and survey card, which can be found and filled by following the link below. The DNR has mailed survey cards to select turkey hunters in the state who are also being asked to provide the date and county in which a turkey was seen. If you did not receive a card, you are still encouraged to use the online portal to report sightings. Annual population surveys conducted by the DNR are an important component of the species management plans, which includes providing hunting opportunities. Any and all participation is greatly appreciated.
