The East Sac County (ESC) Elementary School in Wall Lake has closed its doors for classes permanently, but school and city officials are still working on what comes next for the now vacant structure. While shuttering a school building is not ideal for the community, Clerk, Chris Rodman, says the Wall Lake City Council is hoping to make the best of their situation.
The structure was originally built in the 1920s with an expansion completed in the 1960s. Rodman says the building is still in good shape for its age, but the council still has a lot of questions left to answer before they can move forward with negotiations with the ESC school board.
As it stands, ESC still owns the structure, but discussions are underway to work out the details of a transfer of ownership to the City of Wall Lake. Rodman says the details will take some time to work out and will likely be conducted in closed sessions.
The ESC Board of Education announced earlier this year they would be reducing the number of attendance centers in the district from four to just two. The middle school site in Sac City is scheduled to close following the 2020-21 school year.
