The Carroll American Legion has made the difficult decision to cancel several activities and ceremonies planned for Memorial Day due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Legion member, RT Schreck says they had lengthy discussions within the organization and ultimately agreed it would be safer for everybody if they did not host a parade or invite the community to help place flags at the cemetery.
They considered multiple avenues to keep these events on the schedule, such as extending the parade route or adjusting how they set the flags, but they all resulted in too many people congregating in one place. However, Schreck says the Legion has come up with a plan to decorate a smaller portion of the community.
He adds it is heartbreaking that the Legion will not be able to honor the area’s fallen heroes the way they normally do, but Schreck says some aspects of Memorial Day will go on as usual.
That reading will occur during the noon hour on Memorial Day, May 25, on 1380 AM and 95.1 FM KCIM. While the parade and cemetery ceremonies have been canceled, Carroll residents are encouraged to fly their own flags prominently to honor the men and women who have given their life in service to our nation.
