The National Weather Service has cancelled their annual tornado drill scheduled for next week. Due to ongoing Covid-19 concerns and the call for social distancing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the March 25th drill will not take place. Many of the shelter locations are confined spaces, exactly where people should NOT be congregating. Another group of focus is schools, and the National Weather Service says with the majority out of session for the next four weeks, the outcome would lack effectiveness. Severe Weather Awareness Week will, however, continue as normal in conjunction with Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. They will provide safety reminders as we approach the 2020 severe weather season. They are asking all Iowans to spend a few minutes next week thinking about and discussing their in-home severe weather sheltering plans.
