This K9 Team Outshines All, Taking Home Best In Show At Certifications

The Carroll Police Department’s K9, Eudoris, has been an active member of the force since December of 2017. His handler, Officer Justin Ferrin, says there are two sides to the Belgian Malinois, and both of them are unerringly faithful.

Ferrin credits the breeder and their trainer, Joshua Morton with Canine Tactical, for the excellence in performance. There is no doubt this is the reason for the recent award the pair received as Best in Show during certification exercises.

Morton says Eudoris is the result of a “formula of drives/genetics mixed with this style of training method [that] makes a cocktail that is gangster.” He adds cellular memory plays a key factor in the consistency of performance in his cloned animals. The certification exercises are coordinated by Morton, who creates full mission profiles. Teams get one shot at a simulated, real-world situation.

They are then met with gunfire and pursue the suspect into a large building, where he is apprehended and a search is conducted. All of this in only about a half hour or so. There were 14 of Morton’s dogs participating in certification but only one award. The final determination of a winner, however, fell largely to a third party, unbiased K9 expert brought in to review the certification process.

Ferrin says these exercises are invaluable in maintaining the level of excellence they work toward in their annual training. And, he adds, none of this would have been possible without support from the community.

Ferrin says they have been able to keep Eudoris busy since he joined the force and he has played key roles in not only helping at scenes, but in how his work helps solidify cases against suspects in the courts.
