A coalition of business and property owners were present at Monday’s Carroll City Council meeting, seeking relief from the city on the monthly expenses associated with public restrooms in Westgate Mall. Chico Kanne, owner of the property, says they have had issues with keeping up on the maintenance and supply needs.
Kanne told the council that owner of Jeanine’s Hallmark, Jeanine Meiners, has been paying out of her own pocket for cleaning and supplies. They have worked out a five-day-per-week deal with a cleaning service from Odebolt and were paying $300 per month. However, the service reduced that by $100 until more funds can be collected. Downtown business owner, Laura Comito, says they would like to utilize New Hope cleaning services, but no crew is available. She adds in previous years, many of the business owners outside of the mall were willing to help support the restroom as a benefit for customers. That number has dropped over time.
Mayor, Dr. Eric Jensen, brought up the $50,000 in support provided by the city for restroom construction, along with the agreement made at that time.
Currently, the Carroll Chamber of Commerce is providing $187 per month of support to be pooled with that paid in by the mall and other merchants. No action was taken, but the council requested some time to review a listing of income sources along with the actual expenses that were presented to them at Monday’s meeting.
