July marked the beginning of the new Fiscal Year (FY 2020) for the City of Carroll. Finance Director and City Clerk, Laura Schaefer, says she is happy to report they ended the past year with a surplus.
Schaefer explains that the General Fund is their main operating fund, encompassing police and fire departments, buildings, some streets, parks and recreation, the library and the administrative offices. The city is expected to show a positive balance in this fund alone of slightly more than $200,000. Schaefer explains how the surpluses come about.
According to Schaefer, even after paying for projects that have been completed ahead of schedule and those that have carried over, there will still be an excess left. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, says this is the ninth year the City of Carroll has ended with a surplus. He explains that some of the projects they have known will be coming up have been planned for and funds set aside to help cover costs with cash on hand. A couple of these will get underway this week.
Pogge-Weaver credits the city staff, particularly the management team, for coming together and making sure a lot of these projects get done and get done within or under budget. He adds he is particularly proud of the way they have provided easy access to the city’s finances and the independent audits done by other parties.
