Earlier this week, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley completed his 99th annual county meeting for the 39th year in Spencer. Grassley has been well known for holding at minimum one question-and-answer session in each county since his election to the U.S. Senate in 1980. The hallmark of these meetings is that he will take questions on any subject that residents want to discuss. Grassley’s efforts have reportedly set the standard for representative government and he says that is not possible without dialogue between the elected official and the people they represent. “I appreciate the opportunity to hold these meetings, answer questions and listen to comments on any subject from Iowans,” Grassley says. “The cross-section of people I get to meet during town hall meetings and in their workplaces, offices and factory floors, in schools and at service organizations, helps me keep in touch and take the common sense of Iowans from all perspectives to work in the nation’s capital.” Topics that Grassley says were most frequently raised this year included prescription drug pricing, immigration, congressional oversight and investigations, disaster aid, rural broadband, the Second Amendment, national debt, the 2018 Farm Bill, the Renewable Fuel Standard and international trade.
