Another sentence has been handed down in District Court for Carroll County against one of the individuals accused of a shoplifting spree in Carroll earlier this year. On Thursday, Aug. 22, 28-year-old William Fees of Altoona was ordered to pay more than $800 in fines, surcharges, legal fees and restitution after pleading guilty to fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor. Fees was originally charged with fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor, for an incident at the Carroll Walmart on May 26. However, the charge was reduced in exchange for his guilty plea. Fees was also granted a deferred judgement, meaning court records regarding the incident will be expunged, pending successful completion of one year on probation. Three other individuals have also been charged for the thefts. Twenty-eight-year-old Meggan Richards of Des Moines was ordered to pay more than $2,600 in fines, surcharges and restitution after pleading guilty to one count of third-degree theft and two counts of fourth-degree theft, and 28-year-old Justin St. Pierre of Creston has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors on the same charges but has not been sentenced. The trial for 30-year-old Melodie Erickson, who faces one count of fourth-degree theft, is scheduled to begin on Sept. 17 at the Carroll County Courthouse.
