A Jefferson resident is out over $1,700 after falling victim to an internet scam. The Jefferson Police Department received a report at approximately 12:06 p.m. Tuesday from an adult male who says he had been provided with checks that he then deposited into his account. He used what he thought were deposited funds to purchase money cards and then provided the scammer with the numbers off the back. However, the checks were not good. Authorities want to remind everyone that these types of crimes are nearly impossible to investigate as they occur on the internet and can originate from anywhere in the world. Anyone who receives a “get rich quick” offer that seems too good to be true should know that it is almost certainly a scam. Do not every give out personal information over the phone or internet, and generally, anyone asking for payment through a prepaid gift card is not engaged in a legitimate enterprise. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or someone has attempted to scam you, please contact your local authorities.
