“It’s About The Kids,” Says Matt Greteman, The Sioux City Diocese 2019 Good Shepherd Award Recipient, For His Work On Kuemper Fieldhouse

Kuemper tennis coach and supporter, Matt Greteman, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Good Shepherd Award, which he will receive during the Sioux City Diocese’s 23rd annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools next month. In April of 2017, Kuemper opened its new fieldhouse on Grant Road. The push for the facility began as far back as 2011 and President, John Steffes, says Greteman played a pivotal role during every step.

Steffes adds Greteman never wanted credit for all his work, and that is why they planned a surprise announcement for him early Tuesday evening at the fieldhouse. The Good Shepherd award is presented to school employees within the diocese who are admired, respected and held in high regard by students, parents and the individual’s peers. Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Patty Lansink, made the trip to Carroll to announce the award in front of Greteman’s family, friends, colleagues and students. Lansink says he was actually slated to receive the award a year earlier.

For the last two years, the fieldhouse has served as a place for Kuemper’s many athletic programs to practice, and according to Athletic Director, Chad Klein, its uses extend beyond just sports.

Greteman downplays his role in the fieldhouse’s fundraising, planning and construction. He says the school saw a need for their students and he did his best to make sure that need was met.

Greteman will receive the award during the Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Delta Hotels Center in South Sioux City, Neb. Tickets for that dinner can be purchased online using the link included with this story on our website.
