Carroll Chamber Of Commerce Welcomes Union Pacific ‘Big Boy’ Locomotive To Mark Beginning Of Sesquicentennial Week

The City of Carroll will celebrate the passage of 150 years since the town’s founding in 1869 later this week, and the Carroll Chamber of Commerce marked the occasion by welcoming a Union Pacific Railroad “Big Boy” steam locomotive to the depot this (Monday) afternoon. The tracks were lined with people waiting to see the enormous engine pull into the station, and Chamber Executive Director, Shannon Landauer, says it was a great way to kick off Carroll’s Sesquicentennial week.

The community celebration officially begins on Friday, July 19 in downtown Carroll. According to Landauer, they get started at 8 a.m. that morning with a barbecue competition, and the fun continues throughout the day and into the evening hours.

As for Saturday’s schedule, Landauer says a lot of emphases has been put on events that will be fun for the whole family.

At 5 p.m., the focus shifts to the Kuemper Fieldhouse, where there will be a community picnic, followed by an ecumenical church service. Saturday’s activities come to a close with a fireworks display just outside the facility on Grant Road. Landauer expects there will be a lot of traffic and travel will be difficult. That is why they have implemented a shuttle service during the busiest day of the Sesquicentennial.

Sunday is a slower-paced day, with tours of the Carroll County Historical Museum from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Merchants Combine and All-Star Game at 1 p.m. and the community theater group’s final showing of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at 2 p.m. at the Carroll Rec Center.
