A target date of Memorial Day has come and gone as the wet weather has delayed the completion of Carroll’s first all-inclusive playground, Kellan’s Kingdom. Alie Tigges, mother of the park’s namesake, Kellan, who was born with a disease similar to cerebral palsy, says it will be in yet this summer.
She says since much of the work is being donated by local contractors, they too have been struggling to get things completed because of the weather this year. Tigges says that once they get the equipment up, they will be hosting a celebration for the entire area.
Nearly everyone, Tigges says, can see how this park will be a benefit to someone they know.
Tigges adds she can’t wait to be able to say to Kellan, and others of all different abilities, let’s play! The Tigges family traveled to Des Moines on Friday in their ongoing efforts to see all-inclusive play areas across the state and to have local, state and federal governments recognize this need in their planning processes. They met with Gov. Kim Reynolds for a proclamation naming July 1 as Iowa’s Day of Inclusiveness.
