Arlo Sigmon, age 83 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Arlo David Sigmon was born on May 9, 1936, to parents JC and Stella (Koppleman) Sigmon in Auburn, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Auburn. Arlo grew up in Auburn where he attended Pleasantview #5 Country School south of town and graduated with Auburn High School’s Class of 1954. After graduation, Arlo served his country by joining the United States Army in November of 1956. He earned the rank of Corporal and earned special honors as a sharp shooter and also received the good conduct medal. He was honorably discharged in 1958. After returning home, Arlo attended the Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA. He would later own and operate Farmers Hay and Straw Auction Co.
On June 7, 1959, Arlo was united in marriage to Doris Marlene Shaw at the United Methodist Church in Sac City, IA. This union was blessed with two sons: Matthew and Mark. He raised his family in Sac City where he also farmed the land and raised livestock. Arlo was also a school bus driver for 25 years. Perhaps one of his most beloved roles though, was when he got to dress up as Santa Claus and walk the streets of Sac City during the holiday season. He was the “town Santa” for over 25 years.
Arlo spent most of his adult life around auctions either working them, attending one just for the fun of it, or was there as a buyer himself. He enjoyed going to charity auctions, horse sales, and selling at the Waverly Midwest Draft Horse Sale. He thoroughly enjoyed his horses and mules.
Arlo was very involved in the community. He volunteered as an Auctioneer annually at the Sac County Fair and really enjoyed volunteering his services every year at the United Methodist Church pork loin and pie auction…we all know why, for the pie of course! Arlo was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City where he was a part of the men’s group. Every morning he had coffee with “the guys” whether it be at Hutch’s Café or Food Pride. He cherished the moments he spent with his family and friends. Arlo loved his family unconditionally and was always there to help when needed. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 60 years, Marlene Sigmon of Sac City, IA; son Mark (Dianna) Sigmon of Sac City; grandchildren: Melissa (Gregg) Thomsen (Kortni and Dylan) of Sac City, Michelle (Mike) Auen (Cooper, Carson and Malia) of Sac City, Sarah (Taylor) Thompson (Piper and Marina) of Sac City, Mollie Sigmon, Kellie Sigmon and Jadon Horton all of Sac City, Shawn (Summer) Sigmon (Storm, Raven and Davey) of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Justin (Stephanie) Sigmon of Laurens, IA; sisters: Arlene (Bob) Foster of West Des Moines, IA, and Ardith Sigmon of Des Moines, IA; brother Arlin (Eleanor) Sigmon of Auburn, IA; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Arlo was preceded in death by his infant twin brothers; parents JC and Stella Sigmon; son Matthew Sigmon; parents-in-law Earl and Maude Shaw.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Sac City with Rev. Missy Brown officiating. Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
