St. Anthony Welcomes New Staff Chaplain

St. Anthony Regional Hospital is welcoming a new staff chaplain, Sister Mary Laurence Ugoaru, to their spiritual care team. She joins Angelo Luis as the second staff chaplain who will be serving patients, residents, and employees. “I am happy to be here and look forward to serving all people, no matter their faith, beliefs, color, gender or age,” Ugoaru says. “I will be focusing on the social and spiritual well-being of everyone seeking help at St. Anthony and look forward to helping us grow as a hospital family, while also meeting the needs of patients and the community.” Sister Ugoaru comes to Carroll from the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. During her time there, she provided spiritual care and palliative and bereavement support as the hospital chaplain. She says she has been involved in the healthcare field since she was a teenager and her early teachings in how to be sympathetic and feel the pain of those in need has evolved into a religious call to serve. Sister Ugoaru is a native of Nigeria and brings more than 30 years of experience with her to St. Anthony. She has a bachelor’s degree in education and is working towards a master’s degree in pastoral studies. She is also certified in grief counseling, clinical intervention, social work, and medical ethics. Ugoaru has recently relocated to Carroll and in her spare time enjoys reflecting, praying and looking for new ways to do things.
