Local Fire Departments Respond To Multiple Reports Of Grassfires In The Region Monday

With spring now in full swing, many area farmers and landowners are conducting controlled burns, and several local fire departments were dispatched Monday to deal with a few that grew larger than anticipated. At approximately 2:53 p.m., the Coon Rapids and Scranton Fire Departments responded to an out-of-control grassfire five miles north of Coon Rapids near the intersection of A Avenue and 290th Street. The Glidden Fire Department was also dispatched yesterday (Monday) in response to a couple of controlled burns. Authorities say the City of Manning was inundated with smoke after winds covered the community with a hazy cloud from a monitored fire into town Monday evening. No injuries were reported in any of these incidents. Controlled burns generally result in many reports to dispatchers from concerned citizens. To cut back on the number of unnecessary fire calls, officials ask individuals who are planning a burn to notify local authorities before beginning.
