Driver Eludes Jefferson Authorities In High-Speed Chase

An as of yet unknown driver eluded authorities in a high-speed chase last Friday morning. The Jefferson Police Department reports the incident began at approximately 2:18 a.m. when an officer attempted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 30 near Elm Street. Instead of yielding, the driver accelerated when the siren was activated. The officer gave chase westbound on Highway 30, reaching speeds of more than 120 miles per hour. The driver turned south on J Avenue, only to find a train blocking the roadway. They turned around and continued west on 30 to Easton Avenue, where the driver turned south into Scranton at which time the officer lost sight of the vehicle. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a search of Scranton but the vehicle was not located. An investigation is ongoing.
