A Coon Rapids man, who was sentenced in February on an assault causing bodily injury charge, has filed his notice of appeal in District Court for Carroll County. On Dec. 18 of last year, 32-year-old Travis Jeffery Barker struck the victim in the face while at a bar in the 500 block of Main Street in Coon Rapids. Barker pled guilty to the serious misdemeanor charge and was ordered to serve 60 days in the Carroll County jail, with all but two days suspended and credit for time served. His sentence also included more than $1,000 in fines, surcharges, court costs and restitution. He was placed on informal probation for one year with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as a condition for a portion of that sentence being suspended. An attorney from the Office of the State Public Defender has been appointed to represent Barker during the appeal process. The case is pending review in the Iowa Court of Appeals. Barker does have a history of violence. He was charged in September of 2011 with second-degree murder, a class B felony, after punching his roommate, 28-year-old William Smith, in the head and causing his death. Barker later pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to no more than five years in prison.
