Three Concurrent Five Year Prison Terms For Carroll Man Who Pleads Guilty To Burglary And Forgery Charges

A Carroll man has been sentenced to three concurrent terms of up to five years in prison each for burglary and forgery charges. Twenty-seven-year-old Nicholaus Allen Augustus was sentenced Thursday in the Iowa District Court for Carroll County after pleading guilty to two counts of third-degree burglary and one of forgery, all class D felonies. The charges stem from a search warrant executed at Augustus’ residence at the end of August last year. Authorities located several items from burglaries, a firearm, drug paraphernalia and a substance that was suspected to be methamphetamine. Augustus was connected to burglaries from two Glidden businesses, forgery and was found to be in possession of burglary tools. Court records say the sentencing decision was made in part because of the defendant’s criminal history, his demeanor at hearings, a history of substance abuse and other circumstances surrounding the offenses for which he will be serving time. Augustus will receive credit for time served. More than $1,000 in fines and surcharges as well as court appointed attorney fees have been waived. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, after which Augustus will be transported to the Oakdale Medical Classification Center in Coralville.
