A Breda man has received a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting a Carroll resident in the early morning of New Year’s Day. According to court records, the order against 30-year-old Matthew Harrison Hartzell was handed down last week in District Court for Carroll County. The misdemeanor charge against Hartzell stems from an incident on Jan. 1 in the 1100 block of North Court Street. The Carroll Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 3 a.m. that morning to find Hartzell had attacked the victim, causing injuries to their chest and neck. Hartzell was sentenced Thursday to five days in the Carroll County jail, with credit for time served. The sentence was suspended on the condition that Hartzell refrain from violating any criminal laws beyond misdemeanor traffic offenses.
