A Vail woman, who is charged with forgery and theft in District Court for Carroll County, has been sentenced to serve three years of probation after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors. According to court records, the order against 29-year-old Kalie Marie Gaines was handed down Thursday. Gaines originally faced three counts of forgery, class D felonies, and one count of third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor. In exchange for her plea, the theft was amended to second-degree, the remaining counts were dismissed and a five-year prison sentence was suspended. The charges stem from an investigation by the Carroll Police Department into a series of checks written throughout Carroll from Aug. 29 to Sept. 6, 2017 from a reportedly stolen checkbook. Gaines wrote more than $5,000 in bad check to at least 10 different business during that time. In addition to probation, Gaines was ordered to pay nearly $7,000 in fines, surcharges and restitution.
