Carroll Native Named Newest Captain On Police Force

This past July, three Carroll Police Officers were tested, interviewed and certified eligible for promotion to the rank of Captain by the Civil Service Commission. Chief Brad Burke says the entire process to determine the best candidate can be a lengthy one, and involved an outside consultant.

The spot has been vacant for quite a while now, and Burke says they are pleased to be able to announce on of those three officers will be filling the open position next month.

Kathol is currently still working the night shift until the changeover in October. He grew up in Carroll and attended Kuemper Catholic High School. He then studied at Iowa State University, coming back to Carroll in 2014 as a patrol officer with the department. He says there are a couple of different experiences he attributes for this promotion happening so quickly in his career.

Law enforcement was not the initial path for Kathol. He was a medic in the service and thought he would be going to school to enter that field. However, after just a short time at Iowa State, he realized that really wasn’t for him, resulting in a change to his course of studies. The selection of Kathol as the newest Captain in the department came at the same time as another life-altering event for him and his family.

On Oct. 20, Kathol will definitely see a change to his daily routine. Not only will he move to daytime hours, but he will be given a lot more responsibility for administrative functions. He says he will be doing some scheduling, lining up training and educational opportunities for other officers, taking care of planning vehicle repairs and maintenance and generally helping out wherever he is needed.
