After Recent Attacks, All Women Are Encouraged To Seek Out Self-Defense Training

With the state, local and national news reporting the senseless attacks and murders of three young women in recent weeks, there has been a renewed focus on self-defense. This past Monday, a stand-out women’s collegiate golf champion and Iowa State University student, 22-year-old Celia Barquin Arozamena, was stabbed to death at 10 a.m. on a golf course near Ames. On July 18, 20-year-old University of Iowa student, Mollie Tibbetts, disappeared while out for a run in her hometown of Brooklyn. Her body was found hidden under stalks in a nearby field one month later. And on Tuesday, 35-year-old Wendy Martinez of Washington, D.C., was killed while out for a jog. In light of these crimes, it is difficult for us to say that something like this won’t happen to us in our small, tight-knit communities. But it has also become more important than ever for women of all ages to learn how to protect themselves in the event they are attacked. There will be two opportunities for females 14 years old and up to learn the best survival and self-defense methods from area professionals. The Carroll Police Department will be hosting a free class from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at the Carroll Recreation Center gymnasium. Then on Sunday, Oct. 7, Roundkick Gym, on Highway 30 East in Carroll, will hold a session on Sexual Assault Prevention Tactics (SAPT), as a part of their S.D.E. Defense Series, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Roundkick program will accept girls as young as 12, but only if they are accompanied by their mother or other guardian, such as an aunt or older sister. This course is simple, direct and very effective, covering the three best targets to strike on the attacker and outlining the best weapons you have with you at all times. The three-hour course is $40 per person, and pre-registration is requested. More details on the Roundkick classes and on how to pre-register can be found by following the link included below.
