One Person Dead After Van And Semi Collision South Of Jefferson

One person is dead following a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon about five miles south of Jefferson. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 4 and 290th Street. Twenty-one-year-old Arthur Vanderwaal of Hull, had just turned southbound onto Highway 4 in a 2010 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer when he noticed a northbound 2017 Chevrolet Express Van, driven by 71-year-old Wesley H. Bunnell of Glidden, drift into his lane. Vanderwaal attempted to avoid the van by taking the shoulder, but was unsuccessful, resulting in the Bunnell van striking the driver’s side of the semi. Bunnell was pronounced dead at the scene. Vanderwaal did not report any injuries. The accident remains under investigation. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Transportation, Jefferson Fire Department and Greene County Medical Examiner assisted at the scene.
