Iowa State Trooper Injured In Saturday Morning Accident On I-29

An Iowa State Patrol Officer was injured when his vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 29 early Saturday morning near Council Bluffs. At approximately 5:06 a.m., a 2009 Pontiac G8, driven by 28-year-old Maximo Regalado of Columbus, Neb., was northbound on I-29 when he crossed onto the left shoulder and struck the back end of an Iowa State Patrol 2015 Dodge Charger that was parked on that shoulder. The Pontiac came to rest on its top behind the trooper’s car, which was pushed up against a concrete wall that was in front of the Dodge. Regalado was transported to CHI Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs by Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue, and is suspected of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The trooper, 45-year-old Tiege Melby of Logan, was transported to Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs by another Iowa State Patrol vehicle. Charges are pending in the ongoing investigation.
