DNR Warns Paddlers To Avoid Rivers And Steams Due To High Water Levels

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is advising paddlers to avoid heading out onto the swollen streams and rivers. Consistent rainfall over the past several days has pushed water conditions to dangerously high levels, and more rivers could rise quickly with additional precipitation forecasted into next week. DNR Outreach Coordinator for River Programs, Todd Robertson, says “We encourage all paddlers, especially new and inexperienced paddlers, to stay on lakes and flat-water while the rivers are high due to the heavy rain.” He adds swollen rivers are surprisingly powerful and can carry tons of wood debris downstream to form deadly structures known as “strainers.” Five paddlers have already been rescued during high water conditions since May 1, and even experienced individuals should avoid being out on rivers and streams during this time.
