Iowa DNR And City Of Carroll Report Sewer Main Was Compromised At South Grant Road

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the City of Carroll are continuing to monitor a wastewater discharge that occurred Thursday at the construction site on the corners of U.S. Highway 30 and Grant Road. During the bridge construction on South Grant Road, the contractor, Dixon Construction, drove a piling through a 24-inch sewer main, causing water to flow into a drainage ditch. The contractor and city crews worked quickly to plug the pipe and divert the flow and then installed and oversaw pumps to bypass the broken main until repairs were completed on Friday. It is estimated that less than 500 gallons was released. An unknown amount of wastewater did flow 1.4 miles through the drainage ditch and into the Middle Raccoon River.
