Two Manson-Northwest Webster Students Heading To National Competition

Two Manson-Northwest Webster High School students received top honors at the National History Day in Iowa contest on Tuesday, May 1. This has qualified them for the national level of the competition. Julie Quade and Matthew Helmers will be joining 68 other Iowa students from 18 different schools and two home schools in a trip to the University of Maryland June 10 through June 14 to compete for scholarships and prizes in the next round. The 2018 National History Day Contest will host nearly 3,000 students from the United States, Guam, American Samoa, the Department of Defense Schools in Europe and international schools in China, Korea and South Asia. “Through this program, students learn how to conduct high-level research as they develop their projects, allowing them to enhance skills that will benefit them, not only during their academic years, but beyond as lifelong learners,” says Susan Klower, the State Historical Society of Iowa administrator. Quade and Helmers’ project was titled Clark v. Board of Directors: Ending Educational Segregation in Iowa.
